Marriage
A typical Hong Kong style wedding ceremony lasts for two days: one day following the Western style and the other day the Chinese style.
During the Chinese style ceremony, the groom and his party go to the bride’s home to take her to the wedding ceremony. The bride’s party then challenges the groom with games and asks for “open door money” (usually demanding $888 or $888.8 for auspicious purpose). Once the groom has been admitted into the bride’s family home, the couple will then serve tea to the parents and elderly relatives in the bride’s family.
The Chinese wedding feast features a traditional banquet of around 12 courses. Unlike the West, red is regarded as a lucky colour so the bride will wear several beautiful red-toned gowns during the feast. Each guest brings a monetary gift of around HKD $500. So if you are invited to a Chinese wedding party, you know what to do!
