Cantonese and Putonghua
Cantonese & Putonghua
In China, pinyin is used as the official romanization system for Putonghua. The Hong Kong government uses romanized Cantonese for place and personal names, but it has no official status and Hong Kong people never learn it through schooling.
Putonghua and Cantonese share similar grammar and vocabulary, but they are not mutually comprehensible. This is because their sounds and tones are very different from each other.
